Kolkata doesn't do first impressions — it does tenth impressions, the kind that arrive over sweet tea at 6 a.m. while the city stretches awake around Howrah Bridge. Give it three days minimum. Here's how.
Arriving & moving (1–7)
1. Fly in, train out (or reverse). The airport is efficient; the Howrah station experience is the attraction. Book sleeper class once for the story.
2. Prepaid taxis only from the airport. The counter inside arrivals fixes the price — outside touts don't.
3. Ride tram 25. Asia's oldest running tram, eight rupees, and the slowest great sightseeing in India.
4. The metro is your air-conditioning. One line, very cheap, blissfully cool between sights.
5. Walk the ghats at dawn. Mullick Ghat flower market starts at 5 a.m. — arrive hungry-eyed and camera-ready.
6. Ferries beat bridges. Cross the Hooghly by launch for ten rupees instead of sitting in bridge traffic.
7. Stay near Sudder Street or Ballygunge. Backpacker buzz or old-money calm — both walkable, both honest.

Eating & etiquette (8–15)
8. Eat by the meal, not the restaurant. Breakfast at a cabin (puri-sabzi), lunch at a pice hotel (fish thali), evening rolls at a street cart.
9. Mishti is a food group. Rasgulla in Bagbazar tastes different — locals swear the water matters. Believe them.
10. Right hand only. For eating, giving and receiving. The left stays out of the frame.
11. Bargain with a smile, not a war. Start at 60%, settle near 75, and never argue over twenty rupees.
12. Ask before photographing people. A nod and a raised camera gets a yes nine times out of ten.
13. Carry small cash. The best food costs less than a dollar and no cart takes cards.
14. Drink the chai, skip the ice. Roadside tea is boiled safe; anything with uncooked water isn't.
15. Sundays are slow. Museums close Mondays, markets rest easy — plan the Victoria Memorial for a weekday.
Don't miss (16–21)
- 16.Sunrise over Howrah Bridge from the Babughat side, ferry horns and all.
- 17.The Indian Museum's natural history wing — wonderfully, defiantly old-school.
- 18.Kumartuli, where the Durga idols are born in straw and clay.
- 19.A book hunt on College Street — a kilometre of stalls, haggle kindly.
- 20.Evening adda at a cabin café: coffee, argument, repeat.
- 21.The Maidan at dusk, when the whole city comes out to breathe.
