22 things to know before you go to Kazakhstan

Looking out of an orange tent at a quiet steppe camp

Kazakhstan is the largest country most travellers can't place on a map — and that is exactly why you should go. Three weeks, 4,000 kilometres, one very patient rental car: here is everything we learned, condensed.

The land & the driving (1–8)

1. Distances are the itinerary. Almaty to the Charyn Canyon is a day; the canyon to the singing dunes another. Plan 300 km days, maximum.

2. Rent the 4x4, not the sedan. The last 40 km to every good place is washboard, sand or both.

3. Download offline maps twice. Once on your phone, once on your passenger's. There is no signal between towns.

4. Fuel up at half a tank. Stations thin out east of Almaty and card machines fail often — carry tenge in cash.

5. The steppe wind is real. A three-season tent needs every guyline; we watched a dome tent tumble half a kilometre.

6. Camp anywhere, respectfully. Wild camping is broadly accepted — 100 m from water, 1 km from villages, leave zero trace.

7. Mornings are the golden shift. Canyons glow before 9 a.m.; by noon the light is flat and the flies are unionised.

8. Border zones need permits. The Chinese frontier areas require paperwork filed days ahead — check before you drive.

"Plan 300 km days, maximum. The steppe punishes schedules and rewards the patient."

Food, money & manners (9–16)

9. Say yes to tea. Refusing hospitality is the only real faux pas. The tenth cup is when stories start.

10. Bazaars beat restaurants. Kurt, baursaki and smoked horse sausage (kazy) cost coins and fuel days.

11. Vegetarians: learn the phrase. "Men vegetarianets" plus a smile opens most kitchens to adaptation.

12. Tenge in small bills. Nobody outside cities can break a 10,000-note. Hoard your change like water.

13. SIM cards are cheap and essential. Buy at the airport; top up in any kiosk with a green sign.

14. Russian opens doors; Kazakh opens hearts. Learn ten words of each. "Rakhmet" (thank you) works everywhere.

15. Shoes off indoors. Always. Hosts provide slippers; thick socks are a love language.

16. Photograph people only with permission. Eagles and hunters especially — ask through your guide.

Don't miss (17–22)

  • 17.Sleep on the rim of Charyn Canyon — sunrise does the thing postcards promise.
  • 18.Climb the singing dune at Altyn-Emel at dusk, when it actually hums.
  • 19.Take the Big Almaty Lake road slowly; the observatory turn-off is the viewpoint.
  • 20.Eat lagman in a truck stop. Judge the stop by the truck count.
  • 21.Visit a falconer through a community operator, never a roadside photo trap.
  • 22.Leave a day unplanned in Almaty. The mountains will suggest something.
